I really like the contrasting theme of this image, offering on first glance a black and white perspective. When taking a closer look, a deeper impact is revealed – that of colour, indeed, yet brought by the device of wording. The body as the soul of the picture is featuring varying aspects of life (alive), life cycles (the seasons) and perspectives (explore). Thus, the viewer is confronted with a universal theme that allows an individual identification by mirroring one’s own thoughts/experiences. The image itself therefore acts as a mirror, if for most of the viewers probably subconsciously. I find this fits the contest theme “Best of 2009” very well, as it offers a universal perspective.
I really like this picture, with its universal themes of the human experience written on her face. I like that her eyes are covered. We are usual exhorted to believe that the eyes are the window to the soul, so the fact that we can't see them here is significant. I would like to have seen the words of emotion standing out a bit more, but maybe this is as it should be, the changing of the seasons has more significance in terms of the changes wrought by the passage of time, than emotions that are fleeting and soon replaced by others. Great job.
